enervates….

animates…

yes, a frisson
a sliver
of hope
continues to
reside in
my inner being

someday soon
we will
all be free

free
from slothful ignorance
mindless intolerance
from arrogant exceptionalism
of hegemons and kings

free
from bigotry and prejudice
injustice and oppression
from violence and hatred

i look forward
to the day
when we will
all be free
to welcome
and celebrate
the smiles
and laughter
of children
the joy of
mothers and wives
the rightful pride
of unsung lives
that weigh
more on the balance

than all the world’s riches
the might of potentates
the pretense of pundits
the guile of dissemblers

indeed
soon someday
we will be free!

Ang astig at ang takot/the haughty and the worried

I.

sa may Binondo, Chinatown
naka-spot ako ng dal’wang
trapik enforcer ng Maynila

ang una’y mukhang balisa
yung isa nama”y hanep-porma ang asta
naka-shades, Oakley pa yata
naka-helmet pa mandin
takot yatang mabagok
ang ugok nyang isipan?

II.

I espied two

Manila traffic enforcers

one was deathly worried

the other had a haughty mien

in Oakleys even

and a helmet to boot

who’s really fearful

and who’s concerned?

Long-tailed shrike

consider this shrike
with its long tail
and handlebar mustache

looking down
forlorn
despairing

complaining
lamenting the
loss of its colorful world.

A dissertation on Valentine’s day

i may endlessly dissertate
Valentine’s a social construct

Chaucer did mention romantic love
modernity morphed it into a conspiracy

so chocolatiers

restaurateurs

hoteliers

florists

and all manner of traders

can make more moolah

yet, i can’t avoid concluding
the day truly sucks
without a significant partner.
